Clew Bay Archaeological Trail

Clew Bay Archaeological Trail is a popular trail for holiday makers and travelers to experience a sense of the ancient Celtic times and how the natives once lived. There are over 700 archaeological monuments in the general area. The standing stones at Killeen and at Cross (1km away) are always a talking point over the counter at Melody’s & reveal a sense of depth, history, and local heritage that more and more are discovering. There are many more local points of interest, and this trail is highly recommended by us.

Killeen Beach Loop Walk

Locals & non-locals love to walk, run or cycle the 7.2km loop of Killeen that takes in some of the finest beaches, finished off with a coffee & a Snickers, the perfect kickstart to a Saturday. Follow the signs to complete the loop. Linked below.

Clapper Bridge

Clapper Bridge is a hidden gem, just 500m from Killeen crossraods. Turn right at Killeen and right at the next crossroads to find it. Recently featured on RTE news, it is an 1840’s footbridge that is a piece of functional stonework, some might say artwork, that passes over Carrowniskey river and up a seclusive laneway. You can link it in while on the Killeen Loop Walk!

Gowlaun Church

An unusual feature of this 1800’s church, is the Holy Water front at the entrance never dries up. According to folklore, the MacNamara’s of Bunlough (Devlin North) built the church. The steeple is also unusual because it is 10.7m high and it is noted that the stones at the bottom are the same weight as those at the top, giving a uniform balance to the walls which was not a typical build at that time. The Lost Valley

The Lost Valley is voted Tripadvisor’s Traveler’s Choice 2020 and 2021 at #1 of 289 Sights and Landmarks in Western Ireland. It is located at the end of the main road from Louisburgh and is a guided historical tour of what is now the Bourke family farm in Uggool, beside Silver Strand. The tour is an absolute must, providing an educational step back in time, exploring the lost famine village, the history of the area and the farm, displays of the traditions still ongoing today such as working sheepdog demonstrations, potato-farming and working the land.
Booking is essential. +353 (0) 85 1139977 thelostvalley.ie

Silver Strand Beach

Cross Beach is a beautiful flatland beach where the wildlife, the water and the land are in conversation. Cross has some notable geographical features such as the lake and adjoining estuary called the Struthair (shruffer). It’s paradise for an early morning walk and a dip and views of what the locals call The Reek (Croagh Patrick). Turn right at Killeen crossroads to visit.

The White Strand

The White Strand is found at Thallawbawn or Talamh Ban in Irish – talamh meaning ground and ban meaning white. It is a very long, beautiful strand that has a mystical air about it and some unusual features you won’t find anywhere else. It is 6km from Killeen.

You will cross a channel to enter the beach, keep an eye on the tide to make sure you are ok to return! You will also find the remains of an old graveyard out on the beach, that was dug into the nearby headland, but over time has been washed out toward sea due to tidal flooding and storms. Keep going and you will see the stern of a Spanish Armada shipwreck, lodged deep in the sand by the tide, a memorable landmark to snap a photo.

Mweelrea Mountain

Mweelrea Mountain is the highest peak in Connaught at 814m. Mweelrea (Mweel-rah) is quite the hike at 11-12km of varied terrain and has become increasingly popular post-pandemic as a hiking day out, with scenery of Connemara and the entire locality. The starting point is before Silver Strand, along the main road. Please check the weather forecast before commencing the climb, it is also recommended to hire a mountain guide, to go with an experienced climber or to make use of a navigation app to stay safe.
